The Common Man asked: I’ve hit a rather rough patch financially, and am considering filing for bankruptcy. Nowhere near actually doing it yet, just considering all options.
Does filing for personal bankruptcy prevent me from getting student loans for grad school in the future?

My husband and I haven’t been able to pay our student loans in a while, and I think we are now in default. Our refund wasn’t offset, and I checked status on the rebate today and it gives me an amount and says it will be deposited this Friday the 9th. Is there still a chance they can take money for the loans?

I’m starting college soon, and I almost positive I am going to need extra money for books, and other things I have to have. I’ve filled out the FAFSA. I have heard of student loans that you can borrow and not have to pay back until after graduation, and that would be perfect. I am married. What do you think would be the best to look towards? I do not work right now but my husband is in the military. Please help!

SB asked: I am graduating from law school, and, contrary to what everyone says, most lawyers don’t make a lot of money. I have about $150,000 in student loans, and they are all over the place. Some are subsidized government loans with low, fixed interest rates. Some are private loans with high variable rates. I need to figure out which loans should be consolidated, how to get low monthly payments, and when I should start saving.
My question is: which financial advisers are the best for helping to get out of debt? Is there anyone who specializes in student loans?

I took out $20,500 in student loans this year and only needed $10,000. I got a check back from my school for the rest. Would it be illegal for me to use this balance for something other than school….since housing counts as living expenses?

I’m assuming lenders like Sallie Mae should know that the payments are slowly coming in than usual due to the fact that people are getting laid off and jobs are scarce.
Now I have $25,000 in student loans. I’ve gone into deferrment for now since I’m only taking one class right now while I look for a job that I can start saving up to pay off my student loans.
I can’t keep defering the payments forever!

I have qualified for Pell Grant, but this will not be enough to live off of. I will work part time and attend school full time. Please help with any advice or experiences you have.
